Neither is ideal. Garden soil carries fungi and pests that cause damping-off and compacts in small cells; standard potting soil is too coarse and heavy for tiny roots. Use a fine, sterile seed-starting mix for germination, then pot up into a richer mix once true leaves form.
When do I move seedlings from the heat mat to lights?
The moment they break the surface. A heat mat speeds germination, but once seedlings emerge they need bright light immediately and no longer need bottom heat. Leaving them on the mat too long after sprouting encourages stretching. Move trays under lights and turn the mat off or shift it to the next batch.
Which crops should I never start indoors?
Root crops and quick direct-sowers. Carrots, radishes, and beets fork and stunt if transplanted, and beans, peas, and corn germinate so fast outdoors that starting them inside offers no advantage and risks transplant shock. Sow all of these directly where they’ll grow.

Yes — tomatoes are unusual in that they root along any buried stem. Potting up or transplanting them deep, with the lower stem under the mix, produces a stronger root system and a sturdier plant. Can I reuse seed trays and mix from last year?

Will seeds I save from my own plants grow true indoors?
Open-pollinated and heirloom seed grows true to type, so seed you save will match the parent — which is the whole appeal of building a self-renewing garden.
