Tendergreen Bush Beans

A Kitchen Garden Staple Since the 1950s

Tendergreen (Phaseolus vulgaris ‘Tendergreen’) is one of the most enduring heirloom bush bean varieties in North American gardens, and for good reason. The plants are compact — reaching 18–24 inches — which makes them ideal for smaller garden beds, raised beds, and even large containers. They set a heavy crop of uniform 5–6 inch pods that are tender, nearly stringless at the right harvest window, and have the clean, grassy-sweet flavour that properly grown fresh beans deliver but supermarket beans almost never do.

The variety is also a workhorse for succession planting. Because it matures in 55 days, you can sow every 2–3 weeks from last frost through midsummer and have a continuous supply of fresh beans rather than one overwhelming glut. A second or third sowing in late July gives a solid fall harvest before frost. For Canadian gardeners in zones 4–6 with shorter warm seasons, this fast maturity is particularly valuable — you get a full productive cycle even in a tight summer window.

🌱 How to Grow Tendergreen Bush Beans

Bush beans are among the most straightforward vegetables in the garden — direct sow after frost, keep watered, harvest regularly. The main mistakes people make are planting too early in cold soil (beans rot rather than germinate below 15°C/60°F), overcrowding rows which reduces airflow and increases disease pressure, and waiting too long to pick — pods left on the plant past their prime trigger the plant to stop producing.

Water consistently and deeply — beans dislike erratic moisture, which leads to tough, stringy pods. Water at the base of the plants to prevent fungal issues on the foliage. Do not work around bean plants when the foliage is wet, as this spreads bacterial diseases. Beans fix their own nitrogen from the soil — they need very little fertilizer, and too much nitrogen produces lush leafy plants at the expense of pods.

Harvest every 2–3 days once pods begin to size up. The window between “just right” and “overgrown” is short — about 3–4 days. Pods at the right stage snap cleanly when bent. Pods left to mature and yellow on the plant signal to the plant that its reproductive job is done and it stops producing new flowers. Keep picking and the plant keeps bearing.

Tendergreen’s flavour is best appreciated simply — blanched for 3–4 minutes and dressed with good butter and salt, or quickly stir-fried with garlic and a splash of soy sauce. The texture holds up well to cooking without going mushy, and the near-stringless pods make prep fast. They also freeze exceptionally well: blanch for 2 minutes, plunge into ice water, dry, and freeze in a single layer before bagging. Frozen Tendergreen beans from your own garden will taste markedly better than anything from the grocery store in January.

For long-term storage, allow a final planting to fully mature and dry on the vine — the dried seeds are excellent as shell beans for soups and stews, with a mild, creamy flavour when cooked from dry. This also gives you saved seed for next season, free.
