Diatomaceous earth kills insects the same way it did a million years ago — by physically abrading their exoskeleton until they dehydrate and die. No chemistry, no toxicity, no resistance possible. Diatomaceous earth works on a principle that insects can’t evolve around — it physically damages their exoskeleton. The fine powder is composed of fossilized freshwater algae (diatoms) ground into microscopic particles with razor-sharp edges at the microscopic level. When crawling insects walk through it, those edges abrade the waxy outer cuticle that retains moisture in their bodies. They desiccate and die, typically within 24–48 hours. Because the mechanism is entirely physical, insects cannot develop resistance to it the way they do to chemical insecticides — it will work just as well a decade from now as it does today.

The distinction between food grade and pool grade diatomaceous earth is critical and worth understanding clearly. Pool-grade DE has been calcined (heated to very high temperatures), which converts the amorphous silica into crystalline silica — a known respiratory hazard and a form that’s genuinely dangerous to inhale. Food grade DE uses amorphous silica, which is inert and non-toxic. Doktor Doom’s food grade product is the safe choice for garden and household use. Still, any fine dust warrants a simple dust mask during application in enclosed spaces — common sense applies even with non-toxic materials.

How to Apply Diatomaceous Earth Effectively

DE needs to be dry to work. Apply it to dry soil surfaces, around plant stems, along garden borders, and in cracks where pests travel. A powder duster or repurposed squeeze bottle gives the most even coverage. Focus on entry points — the base of fence posts, along the bottom of raised bed walls, around greenhouse door frames. In the vegetable garden, a thin ring around each plant’s stem base is more targeted and effective than broadcasting it widely across the entire bed.

For indoor use against ants, cockroaches, or bed bugs, apply a very thin, barely visible layer along baseboards, behind appliances, and in wall voids. A thick pile actually works less well — insects walk around heavy accumulations rather than through them. Thin and even is the goal. Reapply after cleaning or after any moisture exposure — the product absorbs moisture and clumps, at which point it’s no longer effective as a contact desiccant.

For slugs specifically, DE is most effective when applied in dry conditions around vulnerable plants. In consistently wet climates, Safer’s iron phosphate slug bait holds up better in rain. Use both in combination during wet spells: bait to kill slugs actively feeding, DE as a dry-condition barrier when conditions allow.
