Sweet Basil Seeds

Organic Sweet Basil Seeds

Sweet basil is one of the most commonly used and widely available of all basils; it’s the often the variety that is sold in supermarkets. It has a very pungent, aromatic and spicy flavour. It goes great with tomato based dishes. The herb is very easy to grow. Basil grows best in a warm season, as it loves the heat. With that in mind, you may not want to start it too early in the spring, or grow it indoors if the weather is still too cool outside.

Basil like most herbs contains a lot of health promoting compounds. Scientific studies have established that compounds in basil oil have potent antioxidants, hence it has anti-aging, anti-cancer, anti-viral, and anti-microbial properties.

How to Grow Sweet Basil From Seed

Sweet basil is very easy to start from seeds. The seed swill germinate within 1 week usually. They can be spread around prepared soil and then lightly covered to keep them in place. As long as you keep the soil from drying out and keep it relatively moist the seeds should germinate well and the seedlings will thrive. It’s important not to start basil outside when it’s still too cool, so you might want to start the seeds a few weeks after the last frost depending on how your climate is. All basils love the heat, although sweet basil is a little more tolerant of cold than others. When you first harvest basil it’s good to trim basil back to 2 inches, as this will encourage a bushier growth and a higher yielding harvest.
