Broccoli Rabe Seeds
Broccoli Rabe is also known as broccoli raab and rapini. It is a cruciferous vegetable that is very popular in Italy and China. The flavour is nutty and bitter; it goes well with meat and seafood. It’s a highly nutritious plant. The stalks, leaves, and buds are all edible. Broccoli rabe matures in 45 days.
Rapini can also be grown for highly nutritious sprouts. Soak the seeds for 2-4 hours before adding to a sprouting jar or other devices. Rinse seeds twice a day. Sprouts mature in 2-4 days. Microgreens take 10-14 days.
1 tbsp of seeds will yield approximately 4 cups of sprouts.
How to Grow Broccoli from Seed
In general, broccoli–as well as closely-related Brassica species like cabbage, kale, and brussels sprouts–is a cool weather crop. Thus, it is best to sow rapini in early spring, late summer, or early fall.
For a spring crop, look to sow seeds indoors, in a greenhouse, in a polytunnel, or a cold-frame two or three weeks ahead of the last expected frost date.
For a fall or early winter crop, look to sow seed 45 days before the expected or typical date of a first frost.
Planted to a depth of 1 cm, seeds can be sown in planting compost in single plugs, or 5-10 cm apart in a seedling tray.
