Balloon Flower Seeds

Balloon flower is a perennial, flowering plant. The blooms will start to appear from mid-summer or later. To have repeat blooms be sure to Keep the flowers deadheaded (cut off old dying flowers).

These beautiful blue flowers are aptly named as they remind one of balloons before they open. The leaves are edible and can be to salads. Its roots have medicinal properties that are used to treat coughs.

How to Grow Balloon Flowers

Balloon flowers (Platycodon Grandiflorus) prefer to be grown in light, rich, moist soil with a pH of  6.1 and 7.8. Ensure that the soil is well-draining as they will not tolerate soggy soils. If starting indoors, the seeds need to be surface sown and pressed into the soil while leaving them exposed to light. Light will help stimulate the germination process.

Once the plants have at least two sets of leaves, transplant them outdoors after the risk of frost has passed. If being sown outdoors, lightly cover the seeds with soil to prevent them from being blown or washed away.

Germination may take anywhere between 2 to 3 weeks.
